Evil season 2 will take on the show’s big mystery, according to the cast

The last four years have brought surprises that no one could have expected. For instance, there was no way anyone could have known that a supernatural horror series on a broadcast network, let alone CBS, would be a cult hit and one of the best shows on TV. And now that Evil, from The Good Wife and The Good Fight creators Robert and Michelle King, is on Netflix, it’s finding an even bigger audience than when it debuted in 2019.

Wisely, the Kings and series stars Katja Herbers, Mike Colter, Aasif Mandvi, Kurt Fuller, Christine Lahti and Michael Emerson, took to the 2020 New York Comic-Con to discuss what’s ahead.

In Evil’s final season 1 episode, there were many hints being thrown around that something is up with Kristen (Herbers). Is she possessed? Or, at the very least, has she been corrupted? One of the final scenes in the season showed her being burned by the touch of a rosary. For those who remember correctly, David (Colter) states earlier in the episode that this could be a sign of someone possessed by a demon.

This came after very strong insinuations that Kristen may have had something to do with the murder of Orson LeRoux, the convicted killer who claimed to be posessed by demons to set the grounds for an insanity plea. LeRoux got his conviction overturned and decided to target Kristen and threaten her family right when he got out. Viewers saw Kristen grab an ice pick from her closet and later, Ben saw her with blood on her leg. While none of the details are known about what exactly she did with that ice pick and how she got blood on her leg, news comes out that LeRoux is definitely dead.

When asked her thoughts about Kristen potentially murdering someone and the fact that she may be potentially possessed, Herbers remained coy. “I think we don’t know, first of all, if she did kill LeRoux,” she said. “I think we’re meant to think that she did and that we won’t find out if she did. But we don’t officially know that.”

Continuing the trouble for Kristen, it seems that David can at least pick up on Kristen’s possible inclinations to head toward the dark side. In the season finale, he has a vision of Kristen inching toward Leland’s (Emerson) demon therapist.

No new footage was shown for the new season since filming hasn’t started due to production restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, the Kings had a bit of fun with a Zoom-shot “trailer” of sorts featuring the cast reciting dialogue in a dramatic fashion. The dialogue seems to highlight the direction of the storyline for the new season, specifically the dynamic between David and Kristen since he had that disturbing vision of her closing in on the demon.

Colter explained the impact of something being off with Kristen. “When [David’s vision] happened, I think most people were wondering ‘Is this actually happening?’” said Colter. “Obviously, we saw the scene with Leland and [the] therapist […] Now, I don’t think there is anything around it. David is definitely going to take Kristen’s character a little differently. He knows that she doesn’t believe the same things that he believes. So they are always talking on different wavelengths. He respects what she brings to the table, but he feels like the things he sees are legitimate. How does he convey this to her and how does he actually get her to pay attention to it? Does he say something to her? Does he just observe?”

He continued, “We won’t necessarily be able to talk about all of this at once, or ever, who knows, but it’s underneath [the scenes] and the audiences will have it in their back pocket, so we’ll see how it develops.”

While Evil season 2 doesn’t have a projected return date as of yet, the Kings did give something to give fans in the meantime — details of a special, silent episode of the show. It is something that they have wanted to do for a while, but couldn’t work it into The Good Wife or Fight.

“This season, what we have is our three main characters going to a silent retreat because of a possible sainthood of a monk who died there,” said Robert King. “There’s a legend that comes out that they realize a demon has been held in a cabinet in the monastery, and if a single word is spoken … this demon will be let out.”
