Soulcalibur’s lovable weirdo Voldo is back

An Animal Crossing character stands on Redd’s boat

Bandai Namco confirmed today that Voldo will return for Soulcalibur 6. Voldo is a series mainstay, having made his debut in the 1995 arcade game Soul Edge. He is one of only five Soulcalibur characters to have made an appearance in every main installment in the franchise.

Voldo’s bizarre fighting style and unique aesthetic are very much in tact in Soulcalibur 6. In his debut trailer, he can be seen wearing his trademark fetish torture gear, and launching his opponents into the air with crotch-based attacks. If you’re not clear why Voldo dresses and fights the way he does, his backstory will help illuminate that:

Voldo was the right-hand man to Vercci, an arms dealer with the nickname “Merchant of Death”, and was tasked to protect the Money Pit, where all of Vercci’s treasures were kept after his death. After spending years in the dark depths of the Money Pit, Voldo lost his eyesight but gained a heightened sense of hearing and awareness, making him extremely deadly to those who dared to enter the Money Pit in search of riches.

Soulcalibur 6 is heading to PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One on Oct. 19. So far, Bandai Namco has confirmed 15 characters for the game’s roster, including returning fighters Taki, Talim, Ivy, Zasalamel, Sophitia, Mitsurugi, Nightmare, Xianghua and Kilik, as well as newcomer Grøh and guest character Geralt of Rivia.
